Request's Guitar Toolkit
A downloadable tool
A collection of tools that I've found made practising guitar more enjoyable for me.
I've been playing guitar on and off for ~15 years (as of releasing this game) and I've always struggled to sit down and consistently play. Still like that today, but I've found a handful of tips that make it easier to show up. I've built some of those structures into this toolkit, so maybe you'll also find it's easier to show up for yourself.
Features
- Tempo adjustment: Play along to your favourite songs, sped up or slowed down to match your comfort level. Really fun way to warm up!
- Transposition: Pitch shift your songs during playback, so you don't have to adjust the tuning of your guitar
- Youtube DLP: Add your own MP3s, to play along. Supply your own MP3s, or download them from youtube via YTDLP
- Structured practice: Track what exercises you're working on - how many reps per day, as well as the duration and tempo of each rep.
- it even has a metronome (whoa)
Unsolicited Advice
Some tips that have helped me
- You have to actually practice with a metronome to get faster
- Doing a little bit every day is much more effective than doing a lot whenever you feel inspired to practice. Even 5 minutes of daily focused practice compounds well
- You have to show up regularly, or else you won't improve. The small gains you get by binging practice will fade away if you don't maintain regular practice
- You have to reward yourself for practising, by playing songs that make you happy
- If you're not having fun, you won't stick with it
- If your routine has too much friction, you won't stick with it
How I recommend using this toolkit
- Leave your guitar in a place where you'll see it every day, preferably within grabbing distance of your computer.
- Every day, do a little bit of structured practice. Pick an exercise, and play along to the metronome. Use the toolkit to record your progress
Important: This should be time dedicated just to guitar. Don't watch something in the background. When running scales, you want to be mindful of the way that you're playing. It doesn't matter if you can play fast, if it sounds like shit
- After practising, reward yourself by playing some songs.
If you feel like this structure doesn't work for you, that's cool! What works for me won't work for you - the most important thing is that you're enjoying the time spent playing guitar.
Practising a craft is a very personal thing, and it's hard to capture all of the nuance in a couple paragraphs. Play around, see what works for you! Consider input from multiple sources! Have fun!
